Emmaus course

St. Barnabas Church will be running an Emmaus group covering the basics of the Christian life aimed at enquirers, new Christians and those who would like a refresher course.

Emmaus: The Way of Faith is a course designed to welcome people into the Christian faith and the life of the church. It aims to involve the whole church in evangelism, the nurture of new believers and ongoing Christian discipleship. It is rooted in an understanding of evangelism, nurture and discipleship modelled on the example of Jesus in the story of the Emmaus Road .

The group will meet in a friendly, comfortable and relaxed atmosphere with an introductory get together and refreshments to take place on 10 October at Jayne Humphreys house. Following the initial introductory get together the group will meet fortnightly commencing on 31 October 2007 .

Emmaus in depth:

The Emmaus approach

In his report Finding Faith Today, John Finney, one of the authors of Emmaus, found that most people:

How does Emmaus work?

Taking this research on board, Emmaus encourages a journey of faith that is life-changing, enduring and that has an impact on the community of believers, as well as the individual.

The Emmaus course progresses through three stages – contact, nurture and growth. It begins, in Contact, by encouraging the vision of the local church for evangelism and giving practical advice on how to develop contact with those outside the church. The full programme includes a 15-week Nurture course that covers the basics of the Christian life and four Growth books that help Christians to deepen their understanding of Christian living and discipleship.

What do others say about Emmaus?

‘The Emmaus Group was the turning point, a stepping stone which has helped me to accept God into my life and shown me how to grow spiritually.’

‘Emmaus aims for an engagement with God rather than a brush with the Church.’ ‘…theologically and educationally sound, attractively presented and easy to adapt to your precise situation.’

What about Housegroups?

A significant number of parish members meet regularly in Housegroups for fellowship, pastoral care, prayer and bible study.

‘Why?’ For the members it’s a chance to grow; a chance to belong; a chance to pray; a chance to learn.

‘What about the commitment, I’m too busy already?’ All those who attend don’t find fortnightly meetings for a couple of hours at a regular venue too much of a commitment. All agree that its two hours well spent!

‘I’m nervous that my bible knowledge is not good enough’ That’s a good reason to join a Housegroup and join the members on their journeys of faith. Housegroups work best when there is a range of bible knowledge and experience.
