Minutes of the meeting of 21st November 2000

Mr. Griffin proposed and Mr. Darvill seconded a motion that the minutes be passed as an accurate record of the meeting. Passed nem. con. and the minutes were duly signed as an accurate record.

Matters arising from the minutes:

23/00

Safety Issues in Sunday School

The churchwardens reported that smoke alarms and first aid boxes had been purchased, that the telephone was now put out on a long lead each Sunday and that staff had attended a first aid course.

38/00

Parish Hall

Mr. Darvill reported that the roof gullies had been completed at a cost of approx. £750. The piano had had four new wheels fitted and will be tuned soon. The piano would now be kept locked. An order for replacement windows in the store room and in the kitchen had been placed. The churchwardens reported that there were two electrical circuits in operation in the hall and that care must be taken when doing any electrical work in the hall.

36/00

Organ

It was agreed that two further quotations for the work on the organ should be sought. One had already been received from Kenneth Breedon but with the potential cost at approx. £9000 it was agreed that further quotations would be wise.

New items:

45/00

Interregnum update

Mr. Griffin reported on the interview with Rev. Catherine Dyer who had met members of the P.C.C. prior to the meeting.

46/00

St. Mary’s Church and Churchyard

The Churchwardens reported that the floor of the church had been sanded and sealed. A tree surgeon had advised that the damaged tree in the churchyard would have to be felled and the other trees inspected for damage in last autumn’s storms. Mr. Saunders proposed a motion, seconded by Mr. Moore, that up to £600 be made available for the work on the trees and a further £175 for the work to the church floor. The motion was passed nem. con..

47/00

Wiring and Lighting

The lighting adviser had been in again and a chart was circulated showing the improvements planned in the lighting. Various points were raised: it was noted that triple pendants would be fitted in the Lady Chapel, it was suggested that the lights be fitted with individual dimmer switches and it was reported by the churchwardens that with the new lighting the church could be up to three times brighter than currently.

48/00

Finance

Mr. Griffin reported that the curate’s house had been sold and the P.C.C.’s share of the proceeds should be with us soon. Last year’s parish share had been paid in full: for this year the figure had gone up to £40,819. Mr. Smith had been very successful in persuading members of the congregation to sign Gift Aid forms, and even donations of the Elements could raise some money as part of the scheme. It was noted that the Parish Fayre this year was scheduled for June 9th, and assuming there is a new incumbent by then, this could be combined with a Gift Day as an opportunity to meet the new priest.

49/00

Radio and Mobile Phone Aerials

Mr. Saunders had received a note from the Archbishops’ Conference regarding the installation of Mobile Phone aerials. We were invited to register an interest in a scheme which would, without committing us to anything at this stage, enable the Church nationally to negotiate an agreement with the mobile phone operators. If an aerial were required in the Linslade aerial, we might then be approached by an operator and could then negotiate within a set of national guidelines. It was agreed to register our interest with the scheme.

50/00

Forster Institute

Mr. Darvill reminded the P.C.C. that the Vicar of Linslade is ex officio President of the Board of Trustees of the Forster Institute. During the interregnum, the trustees had suggested that a churchwarden might like to join the board with the aim of establishing a closer working relationship between the church and the institute, for example in areas such as the level of fees etc.

51/00

Working Agreement with Mrs. Jones

Mrs. Jones circulated a draft document to regulate her work in the parish during her diaconate (document 51/00/a attached to original set of minutes). The council noted the need to support Mrs. Jones during her work, especially with regard to meeting her expenses. Mr. Deighton proposed a motion, seconded by Mrs. Forrest, that the agreement be accepted. The motion was passed nem. con..

52/00

Churches together

Mrs. Stewart reported that Hockcliff St. Baptists’ Church were chairing Churches Together this year. A united service on Passion Sunday (April 1st) was planned at Trinity Methodist Church.
