St. Barnabas’ church, Linslade,

held in the choir vestry at 8.00 p.m. on WEDNESDAY MARCH 1ST 1999

Minutes of the meeting of January 15th 2000

The minutes of the previous meeting of 18 January were approved by the council and signed by the Chairman as an accurate record of the meeting.

Matters arising from the minutes:

17/99 Parish Hall Mr. Darvill reported that a carpet had been laid in the committee room and that curtains had been offered.

19/99 Jumble Sales and Fairs The recent jumble sale raised around £130

20/99 Child Protection 17 people have completed the forms relating to the Child Protection Act. Three people who have been issued with forms have not yet returned them, a reminder letter has been sent. Two people who are joining as Sunday School teachers will be asked to complete the forms, as will the churchwardens, choir and organist. Following the APCM, a Child Protection Officer will be appointed to take responsibility for the process, Father John will continue until then.

36/99 P.C.C. Retreat The venue for the P.C.C. Retreat on 7 May is still to be confirmed.

37/99 Deputy Organist A Deputy Organist is being sought, preferably someone young enough to accept the role of Deputy. John Wearmouth has been asked if he knows of someone in their teens who is interested in applying for the position of "Organ Scholar" receiving organ tuition in exchange for leading the choir.

New items for this meeting:

41/99 St Mary's

This year there are 10 weddings planned at St Mary's. An estimate for the repair of the tower roof is awaited (this was a Quinquennial item). Loose downpipes have been secured and gutters cleared. The garden machinery has been overhauled and serviced. The limewash for the interior decoration has been ordered; the first working party is on Saturday 11th March. The Garden of Remembrance is being extended and redeveloped to include a seat and flower trough. The family of the late Arthur Rawlins have requested permission to place a seat at St Mary's in his memory. The Friends of St Mary's and P.C.C. are to develop a policy relating to such requests.

42/99 Finance

Mr. Soper presented the annual report, subject to completion of the independent

examination.

The following issues were raised:

Mr. Darvill proposed a motion that the accounts be approved subject to examination. The motion was seconded by Mr. Griffin and agreed unanimously.

43/99 P.C.C. Report

The report was presented by The Chairman on behalf of Mr. Saunders

It was noted that Professor Stannard is co-opted onto the P.C.C., not ex-officio. The report was unanimously approved as amended: proposed by Professor Stannard, seconded by Mr. Soper.

44/99 Churchwardens report

Presented by Mr. Griffin

Approved: proposed by Professor Stannard, seconded by Mrs. Jones, unanimous

 45/99 AGPM and APCM

It was agreed that the various reports to the meeting would be enlarged and placed on notice boards around the room. The timings were agreed as follows:

8.00 - 8.05 Vestry meeting

8.05 - 8.30 Opportunity to read reports

8.30 onwards APCM

Hard copy of the reports will be available (after the meeting) on application to the chair (at the meeting).

46/99 Summer Fair

47/99 Sunday School

Mr Barry Warren has stepped down as Sunday School leader. Mrs Beatrice Ashley has agreed to take over.

48/99 AoB

    1. Mr. Griffin: There may be an opportunity to obtain a grant from the local authority. Mr. Griffin will investigate further.
    2. The Chairman: Some members of the Royal School of Needlework visiting St Barnabas at the Festival were interested in our vestments. They have a contact at Watts and Co ant together will work on restoring them for the cost of the materials. They will also instruct any members of the congregation who are interested in some of the techniques so that they can assist.
    3. The Chairman reported that the Cottesloe Christian Training Director would make his base in the Cottage in the room currently used by Father John from the end of March.
    4. The Chairman: There will be a "Prayer Cross" for remembering the long-term sick from the start of lent.
    5. Mr. Darvill reported that there were vacancies in the Parish Hall booking timetable and we are seeking long-term bookings. Advertising in the local press was suggested.
