St. Barnabas church is in Linslade, South Bedfordshire. St. Mary's is in Old Linslade, about 2 miles away. Linslade originally grew up on the river Ouse around the site of St. Mary's church. With the arrival of the railway and canal, the area around the river crossing into Leighton Buzzard grew and became known as Linslade. The former site at St. Mary's becoming 'Old Linslade' The church of St. Barnabas was built to serve the new community, and consecrated in 1849. A copy of the ordinance survey of 1870 clearly shows Old Linslade, Linslade and Leighton Buzzard as distinct areas. Linslade was in the county of Buckinghamshire, and Leighton Buzzard in Bedfordshire. During the Local Government reorganisation in 1965, Linslade was 'moved' into Bedfordshire. Officially the area is known as Leighton Linslade, but locals refuse to acknowledge this. The church of St. Barnabas in Linslade and All Saints in Leighton Buzzard (500 metres away) are in the diocese of St. Albans. The river Ouzel separates Linslade and Leighton Buzzard. Notably, the Leighton Buzzard railway station is in Linslade. The Grand Union Canal also goes through Linslade. St. Barnabas church is midway between the two. The new town of Milton Keynes is 10 miles to the north. |
